Bracken Kitchen

The Bracken Kitchen was a part of the extensive real estate holdings belonging to the Rev. John Bracken. Located on East Francis Street, 18th-century kitchens were detached from the main house to prevent the spread of extreme heat and food odors, and to reduce the risk of fire.

The first-floor room includes a queen canopy bed and is ADA compliant for wheelchair accessibility. The second floor room accommodates twin beds, with a unique atmosphere thanks to the pitched roofline of the house. Both rooms have private, full bath facilities.

Brick House Shop

Located behind the main tavern on Botetourt Street, The Brick House Shop was used by two entrepreneurs, Mr. Cosby and Mr. Moore, to carry on the “RIDING-CHAIR MAKERS business, in all its branches; making carts, and all kinds of wheels.”

This two-bedroom house features one bedroom on the first floor with one queen canopy bed with trundle, and a sitting room with fireplace. The second floor bedroom accommodates two double beds. Both bedrooms have private, full baths.

Brick House Tavern

Located on Duke of Gloucester Street, the Brick House Tavern has 16 rooms, each with private, full baths. Since its construction, the Brick House Tavern has always been used for lodging. In 1770, innkeeper Mary Davis, advertised “12 or 14 very good lodging rooms”, noting that the first-floor rooms were reserved for ladies and the rooms above for gentlemen.

A fireplace in the cellar makes the Great Room cozy and inviting. Both the first and second floors have eight rooms each, making the tavern an excellent choice for large family reunions and gatherings.

Chiswell-Bucktrout House

Located on East Francis Street, The Chiswell-Bucktrout House has nine rooms on two floors, making it an excellent choice for large family gatherings and reunions.

In the six rooms on the first floor, you’ll find three queen canopy bedrooms (one with fireplace), two rooms with twin beds, and one room with a double canopy bed. There are two sets of rooms that can be connected. The second floor has three rooms—two queen canopy bedrooms and one twin bedroom. The twin bedroom can be connected to one of the queen rooms. All rooms include private, full baths. A beautiful outdoor patio and private garden can be used for outdoor entertainment.

David Morton House

Near Christiana Campbell’s Tavern, the David Morton House is located on the corner of Waller Street and York Street.

Ewing House

Named for Scottish immigrant Ebenezer Ewing, The Ewing House is located on East Francis Street. Ewing lived here with Elizabeth Ashton and their son, Thomas. Ewing specified in his will that, if Elizabeth married after his death, the house would go to Thomas. Elizabeth never remarried. The first-floor suite includes a queen canopy bed and a sitting room with a fireplace. The second floor houses two rooms, both with twin beds. Each of the three rooms has private, full bath facilities.

George Jackson House

Located on York Street, The George Jackson House is near Christiana Campbell’s Tavern. The lot was owned by Benjamin Waller. George Jackson bought the property in 1773 or 1774 and operated a shop from the attached wing.

Lewis House

The Lewis House was a part of the property owned by the grandfather of Martha Washington, Orlando Jones. It is located on the corner of Colonial Avenue and East Francis Street.

In the late 18th century, the Williamsburg branch of the Masons rented the ground floor of a house owned by William Lightfoot on Francis Street for their lodge. The Masonic Kitchen is located next to the Masonic Lodge. 18th-century kitchens were detached from the main house to prevent the spread of extreme heat and food odors, and to reduce the risk of fire.

Isham Goddin, a militiaman from New Kent County, acquired the small shop in 1778 for £200.

A two-bedroom house located near the gardens for Christiana Campbell’s Tavern the first floor has a sitting room with fireplace and a bedroom with queen canopy bed. The Orlando Jones House is on Duke of Gloucester Street. Jones is less well known than his granddaughter Martha Washington and his father, the first rector of Bruton Parish Church.

The house includes four rooms. The first-floor rooms both have queen canopy beds and fireplaces, and private, full baths. On the second floor, one bedroom features one double bed and the other bedroom features two twin beds. Each private, full bath is located in the upstairs hallway.

Richard Crump House

Located on Francis Street, the Richard Crump House was part of the extensive real estate holdings of the Rev. John Bracken. Maps from the early 1800s showed the house marked as “Js. Carter.” James Carter and his brother were both surgeons and apothecaries during the mid to late 1700s.
